How to Crop an Image to Exact Dimensions

When a website asks for an exact width and height, simply resizing the entire image can squeeze or stretch the subject. The cleaner method is to choose the required aspect ratio, crop the unwanted area and then export that crop at the requested pixels.

1. Write down the required dimensions

Record the width and height in the correct order. A requirement of 600 × 400 pixels means 600 pixels wide and 400 pixels high. Reversing the values changes a landscape image into a portrait image.

2. Understand the aspect ratio

The ratio describes the shape, not the total resolution. Both 600 × 400 and 1200 × 800 use a 3:2 ratio. If the source photo has a different shape, part of it must be cropped or empty space must be added. Stretching should not be used because it distorts faces, logos and text.

3. Position the important subject

After entering the output dimensions, adjust the zoom and horizontal or vertical position. Keep faces, signatures and essential text away from the edges. A small preview may hide problems, so inspect the downloaded result before submitting it.

4. Export the exact crop

1. Open Crop Image to Exact Size.
2. Select a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
3. Enter the required width and height.
4. Adjust zoom and position until the framing is correct.
5. Select the required output format.
6. Crop and download the image.

5. Check file size separately

Exact pixel dimensions do not guarantee the correct number of kilobytes. A detailed 600 × 400 image can still exceed a form’s file-size limit. If necessary, pass the finished crop through Compress to Exact KB after confirming its dimensions.

6. Avoid enlarging very small images

An image can be exported at larger pixel dimensions, but missing detail cannot be recreated by ordinary resizing. If the source is much smaller than the required output, use a higher-resolution original whenever possible.
